Floats for fishing, boats and plane modelling

Description

Balsa solid wood lumbers, treated against wood insect attacks and kiln dried, produced at the origin in different thickness and length. In accordance with its specific gravity it is used for floats for fishing, boats and plane modelling.

Botanical name

Okroma Lagopus it belongs to the family of Bombacaceae.

Growth area

Central America, tropical South America particularly Ecuador.

Technical characteristic

The commercial timber is sapwood which is white to oatmeal in colour, with a pink-yellow tinge often with a silken lustre.

The texture is fine and even and the grain is straight and open.

Seasoning

When green Balsa contains 200/400% moisture: it has to be converted and dried very rapidly with heavy degrade. Kiln drying requires skilled care to avoid case of hardening or toasting. Once dry it is stable in use with little movement.

Specific gravity

The weight varies from 50 to 340 kg./m3 , most commercial material ranges between 100 to 250 kg./m3 with an average of 130/160 kg./m3. S.G. 0,13 – 0,16

Durability

The wood is perishable and liable to attack by beetle.

It is resistant to preservative treatment.

Uses and manufacturing

Extensively used for heat, sound and vibration insulation and buoyancy in lifebelts, floats, nets, and water sports equipment. Also for protective packaging, toys, model making and as a core material in light-weight sandwich constructions.
