Description

This essence grows in the northeastern regions of the U.S.A., mainly in the Appalachian Mountains area (Pennsylvania).
Cherry wood has acquired an every increasing importance through the years for its peculiar chromatic and physical-mechanical features. Its even colour and fiber make Cherry superb in the finishing processes.
It nails, glues and stains with ease; thanks to its excellent finish, Cherry is successfully used for furniture, cabinet-making, high-class joinery and boat interiors.

Botanical name

Prunus Serotina it belongs to the family of Rosaceae.

Growth area

In deciduous forest areas in Canada and USA.

Technical characteristic

The heartwood varies from reach red to reddish-brown, with a fine, straight close grain with narrow brown pith flecks and small gum pockets.
The wood works easily with both hand and power tools with only moderate blunting effect on cutters. It nails, glues and stains with an excellent finishing.

Seasoning

It dries fairly rapidly but much care must be paid to avoid a moderately large amount of shrinkage during seasoning. There is medium movement in service.

Weight about 580 kg./m3. S.G. 0,58

Durability

The sapwood is liable to attack from the common furniture beetle, the heartwood is moderately resistant to preservative treatment.
The wood is moderately durable.

Uses and manufacturing

Tobacco pipes, musical instruments, furniture and cabinetmaking, high-class joinery, boat interiors, backing blocks for mounting printing plates.
It is an excellent turnery and carving wood.
Selected logs are sliced to get decorative veneers for furniture, cabinets, wall paneling,etc.
